12/5 ~ 12/9 "Heist" exhibition in Miami during Art Basel

I participated in an art show called "Heist" organized by Shatzi Marketing and BlackBook. This group exhibition took place in Miami during the week of Art Basel. Everything I exhibited at this show was new, the Monster Series painting "Scar Monster 2", the 50 4x6 drawings, the new "Dream Texture Series" drawings, and my life size sculpture called "Mongolian Death Worm"!

Other participating artists included Madsteez, Bigfoot, Matthew Waldman from Nooka and more. The show was quite different from conventional shows at Art Basel in the sense that this exhibition was a combination between a retail store and a party and it was sponsored by different companies. The intension was to create a friendlier atmosphere where people could enjoy art and the retail store experience was meant to provide more affordable art pieces (such as limited edition prints and other merchandises) for more casual buyers. This was exactly what Doug, the owner of Shatzi Marketing told me when he first contacted me to participate in the show and I think the exhibition came out really nice. The energy in the exhibition space was totally different than what you would experience at a conventional gallery and people seemed to be having a good time. I got to talk to many people and it was a great oppotunity for me to explain my work and answer questions.

Many thanks to Doug and the staff from Shatzi, Blackbook and of course "Café Bustelo" for providing unlimited coffee through out the show!

12/22 Vj performance with Rarefacción in Quito, Ecuador

As some of you know I lived in Ecuador for a few years. And as some of you know my wife is from Ecuador. But what you probably don't know is that my wife has a cousin, Andres, who is a very talented jazz drummer and he has a band called "Rarefacción".

Andres and I had talked about doing something together several times but we started discussing about it seriously until last summer when Andres came to visit us in New York and played some tracks he had on his laptop. We started to plan an A/V gig in Quito with his band. So as soon as I decided on my vacation schedule to go to Quito for Christmas Andres booked a club called "Poble Diablo" for us to perform on December 22nd.

Normally when I'm going to perform I prepare the entire set in advance and rehearse mixing patterns so that I can focus on synching visual with music. But this time I wanted to try something different so I decided to follow the live jazz format and leave the entire set as improvisation. The band took the lead at first, and I followed their music with my visuals. Once I got used to the live jazz format though we started switching the lead back and forth and it became truely a collaborative performance. Finding a new way to perform such as this was very inspiring to me. Many thanks to Andres and his band for this wonderful experience! "Rarefacción".
